How I Started Playing Pickleball

The Beginning of My Pickleball Journey

It all started by making fun of the name. I had heard the name Pickleball thrown around on TV (shout out Vanderpump Rules) and began seeing courts popping up on top of tennis courts, but once my parents started playing it hit close to home…literally.

My initial reaction was to laugh at the name and immediately write it off. I grew up watching my dad play racquetball and my mom playing tennis. Racquet sports and the gym were big in my house, but I always gravitated towards basketball and volleyball. I could hang in tennis and racquetball, but it wasn’t my thing and Pickleball, in my head, would be no different. Until I played.

I remember the first time my parents coerced me into stepping onto a pickleball court. I started out joking around but I ended up covered in sweat and interested. Deeply interested. The speed and strategy were great, but the thing I fell in love with is what I call The Great Equalizer. The Pickleball court has an incredible way of taking people of all ages, genders, shapes, sizes and making them all completely equal in potential at the sport. Looks Can Be Deceiving!

I have been humbled by people double my age, who were able to have me maxing out my smart watch goals while they barely take more than a step each point. FULL CONTROL.

My pickleball journey is just beginning and I plan on documenting it here. Stay tuned for agonizing paddle shopping, finding the courage to play someplace new, and my battle with DUPR.
